Thanksgiving Baskets to Be Assembled for
Nearly 200 Local Families in Need

Monday, Nov. 22, 2010
Noon to 1:30 p.m.

WHAT:  Nearly 200 families in the Merrimack Valley will eat well on Thanksgiving this year because of volunteer efforts by UMass Lowell students and staff working in conjunction with a local charity and business.

UMass Lowell student organizations and athletic teams have joined “Put the Give Back in Thanksgiving” with the second annual fall food drive on campus. Proceeds from the drive will be used in Thanksgiving food baskets that will be distributed to more than 190 local families in need through Merrimack Valley Catholic Charities. That need has increased since last year, according to organizers, when 150 baskets were distributed through the UMass Lowell drive.

On Monday, students will gather at the UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center from noon to 1:30 p.m. to assemble the Thanksgiving food baskets.

The baskets will include items such as gravy, cranberry sauce, stuffing mix, applesauce, pumpkin and apple pie ingredients and crusts, bread and roll mixes, green beans, corn and potatoes. Hannaford Supermarkets is donating turkeys for each. UMass Lowell students, faculty and staff have donated food and cash to the drive.

The drive is sponsored by the UMass Lowell Campus Ministry in collaboration with the university’s Office of Residence Life, Office of Student Activities and Leadership, Merrimack Valley Catholic Charities and the UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center.

WHERE:   UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center, 50 Warren St., Lowell
