NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to Address Record Number of Graduates at UMass Lowell Commencement

WHAT:  National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell will address a record number of UMass Lowell graduates ߝ nearly 2,400 ߝ who will receive bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees at this year’s Commencement. Goodell will hold a media availability during the ceremony.

Goodell and his brothers will accept a posthumous Doctor of Humane Letters degree for their father, the late U.S. Sen. Charles Goodell, a Republican who was elected to Congress in 1959 and appointed to the Senate following the assassination of U.S. Sen. Robert F. Kennedy in 1968.

Other honorary degree recipients include Doris Kearns Goodwin, presidential historian and Pulitzer Prize-winning author; Richard N. Goodwin, speechwriter and adviser to Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson and Sen. Robert F. Kennedy; Gloria Ladson-Billings, philosopher, scholar and educator; and Alan P. Lightman, physicist, novelist and author of international bestseller “Einstein’s Dreams.” The university also will present the Distinguished Alumni Award to Bonnie Comley ’81, an independent entertainment professional who has produced, acted and written for theater, TV and film for almost 30 years.

In addition to appearing at Commencement, Goodell, the honorary degree recipients and Comley will speak at a Commencement Eve Celebration on Friday, May 28, which begins at 6 p.m. at the UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center.  The celebration will be preceded at 4 p.m. by a special event with the Goodwins ߝ “A Conversation with Dick and Doris” ߝ which will be moderated by former U.S. Rep.
