Flu Study Recruiting New Participants

When:   Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., through April 1
 
What:   The Work Environment Department is recruiting people with the flu to participate in a federal research study.  The results are critical in helping to measure the effectiveness of surgical masks and design ways to prevent an influenza epidemic. Anyone with flu symptoms such as fever, headache or body aches is encouraged to stop by Olney Hall 510 or call 978-729-8477. Participants who do have the flu will fill out a survey and exhale into a breath collector. The process will take 60 to 90 minutes and participants will be paid $80.

Entry to Gym to Be Renamed in Honor of University Athletic Legends

When:  Saturday, Jan. 31. Ceremony to be held during 4 p.m. basketball game

What:   The entry hall of Costello Gym will be officially named the Ciszek/Yarnall Alumni Championship Hall to honor two legends of university athletics: Waldo “Rusty” Yarnall and Dr. James Ciszek. The dedication ceremony and banner unveiling will take place at halftime of the men’s basketball game, which starts at noon. Yarnall briefly pitched for the Philadelphia Phillies, coached three different sports at Lowell Textile/Lowell Technological Institute over 46 years and is a member of four halls of fame. Ciszek was an educator, coach and administrator for 32 years at Lowell State and the University of Lowell.

Photo Seminar Portfolio Exhibition Opens

When:  Artists reception 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31. Exhibit runs through Thursday, Feb. 19. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

What: A new exhibition will open featuring the portfolios of Giovanna Aviles, Lisa Gagne, Karli Geddes, Joe MacFazden and John Morabito, all from the advanced directed studies photography seminar. The show, curated by Prof. Arno Minkkinen, is being held in conjunction with Lowell Photography Weekend.

Panel Explores State and Local Politics With Beckwith, Henning, Schneider

When:  Tuesday, Feb. 3, 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

What:   Several guest speakers will kick off a semester of presentations focusing on state and local politics in Prof. Jeff Gerson’s political science class. The first panel features Geoff Beckwith, executive director of the Massachusetts Municipal Association, former member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives and former director of Work Environment, Environment and Technology Policy at UMass Lowell; John Henning, veteran TV news reporter, political analyst and senior adviser to Denterlein Worldwide; and John Schneider, vice president of MassINC. The series will continue on Thursday, Feb. 5 at 11 a.m. with a presentation by Christy Mihos, former member of the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority and former gubernatorial candidate. All presentations are free and open to the public.
