A university chancellor, the state treasurer of Massachusetts and one of America’s greatest Irish rock bands are among the honorees at this year’s Irish Echo Golden Bridges Awards, scheduled for the JFK Library on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at noon.

Chancellor Marty Meehan of UMass Lowell will unveil a new partnership between the Massachusetts college and its Belfast counterpart, Queen’s University, at the celebratory luncheon which will be attended by the political, community and business leaders of Irish America in the Boston area.

Said Irish Echo publisher Mairtin O Muilleoir: “In our 80th anniversary year, The Irish Echo is thrilled to be bringing together the heroes of Irish America in New England, champions of Irish America who have built golden bridges of peace, business, education and culture between Ireland and the U.S. This builds on our campaign to ensure that Irish American assistance for the peace process in Northern Ireland now transforms into practical alliances of mutual benefit to underpin the peace.”

“I am truly honored to be recognized for working to promote peace and prosperity in Northern Ireland,” says Chancellor Marty Meehan of UMass Lowell.  “I am particularly delighted to receive this award as UMass Lowell announces its new partnership with Queen’s University Belfast, an opportunity which will encourage international exchanges and joint research and will explore the deep threads of connection between our two institutions and regions.”

Among others to be honored at the Golden Bridges Awards will be developer John Hynes III, State Treasurer of Massachusetts Tim Cahill, Dropkick Murphys founder Ken Casey, business leaders Joe Leary and Jim O’Brien, and Philips Healthcare of Andover, Mass., as well as Dr. Anne Donnellon of Babson College and Boston Irish Reporter publisher Ed Forry.
