Social Justice Activist Headlines Freshman Convocation

WHAT: UMass Lowell’s third annual Freshman Convocation  features the Rev. Dr. Jamie Washington, a noted social justice activist who will address the Class of 2012. His topic, “Creating the Future: Yours, Ours and Theirs,” will address how students can make a difference in the world, in their own lives and in the lives of others.

A performance Comedy Central’s Mike Birbiglia, a presentation by the inspirational Travis Roy, outdoor movies and a mini-carnival are among the other events planned for  UMass Lowell’s school-opening kickoff week, beginning Saturday, Aug. 30. Convocation will include welcoming remarks and good wishes from Chancellor Marty Meehan, Provost Ahmed Abdelal, Dean of Students Larry Siegel, Lowell Mayor Edward “Bud” Caulfield, University Professor Susan Braunhut and Student Government President Colleen Phelan.  This required freshman event is the official launch of the academic year.  A barbecue lunch, music and a club fair will be held outside the Campus Recreation Center immediately following the program.
