Iraq War Veterans to Speak at UML Tomorrow

 

When:  Wednesday, Feb. 2 from noon to 1 p.m.

 

Where:  UML O'Leary Library, Room 222, 61 Wilder St., Lowell

 

What:

The cofounders of the Iraq Veterans against the War tomorrow will speak on their experiences and concerns about the invasion and occupation of the Middle Eastern country.

Marine Corps Lance Corporal Michael Hoffman of Pennsylvania and National Guard Sergeant Kelly Dougherty Dougherty of Colorado will share stories of combat and their encounters with the Iraqi people.  Hoffman served in an artillery battery during the March 2003 invasion of Iraq, while Dougherty spent 10 months in the country with a military police company.  Their talk is part of a tour of eastern Massachusetts.

The UML event is sponsored by the Department of Sociology, Peace and Conflict Studies Institute, Labor Extension Program and Association of Students of African Origin.  It is free and open to the public.

UML Celebrates Black History Month

When:  Throughout February

 

Where:  University of Massachusetts Lowell, various locations

 

What:

The University of Massachusetts Lowell will sponsor a series of events in February to celebrate Black History Month.

Activities include "UML Idol," festive dinners, topical discussions and a "Raise it Up" flag party.  For a complete schedule, visit the UML calendar at http://www.uml.edu/calendar.asp.

Events are co-sponsored by the:  Association of Students of African Origin, Latin American Student Association, National Society of Black Engineers, Office of Multicultural Affairs, Council on Diversity and Pluralism, Office of Student Activities and Leadership Development, Department  of Sociology, Peace and Conflict Studies Institute, Greater Lowell for Peace and Justice Labor Extension Program.

Chinese Students and Faculty Host Lunar New Year Festivities

 

When:  Feb. 8, 9 and 11

 

Where:  University of Massachusetts Lowell North

 

What:

            The Chinese New Year or Spring Festival is the most important holiday in China, full of tradition, performances, family celebrations and abundant meals. But for the hundreds of Chinese students and faculty at UMass Lowell, the home country is very far away.

            The Chinese Student and Scholar Association (CSSA) at UML developed a series of activities, called "Chinese Week," to celebrate the traditional festival and share Chinese culture with the campus community and Greater Lowell.  Events include:

Opening Ceremony: Tuesday, Feb. 8, at 2 p.m., Multi-purpose Room, Lydon Library, UML North. CSSA leaders and advisers, and University officials will speak.

Movie Day: Tuesday, Feb 8, 3 to 8 p.m., Multi-purpose Room, Lydon, UML North. Features Flowers on the Sea, House of Flying Daggers, and more.

Gourmet Tour: Wednesday, Feb. 9, 12:30 to 2 p.m., Cumnock Hall, UML North.  Catered by area restaurants, a sampling of Chinese foods.

Celebration Performance:  Feb. 11, 7 - 9 p.m., Cumnock Hall, UML North.

            Professional performers showcase acrobatics, dance, singing and music.

Exhibits Are Ongoing at the University and Dugan Galleries

 

When: See Below

 

Where: University of Massachusetts Lowell

 

What:

            "Mixed Media Installation," an exhibit of work by New York-based artist Meagan Shein, is open at the University Gallery, McGauvran Student Center, 71 Wilder St. through Feb. 23. Shein will present an artist talk on Wednesday, Feb. 2 at 3 p.m. at the gallery exhibit.

            "Papermaking and BookArts," curated by Laura Mayotte, runs through March 2 at Dugan Gallery, Dugan Hall, 883 Broadway St.  A reception will be Wednesday, Feb. 9 from 2 to 4 p.m. For more information, call 978-934-3491.
