University of Massachusetts Lowell Provost Ahmed Abdelal is a native of Egypt who lived in the nation for 26 years and returns at least twice a year to visit family and renew professional connections. He has many contacts throughout the Middle East that have been sustained through cooperation with numerous academic institutions over the past 20 years.

At UMass Lowell, he has led the university’s efforts to establish international partnerships and founded the Middle East Center for Peace, Development and Culture, developing cooperative agreements with institutions in Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Israel and Turkey. He offers unique insight into the current situation in that country and the surrounding region.
