BOSTON -- Junior Jeff Veiga (Lowell) placed first and senior Angus MacDonald (Methuen) took third overall as the UMass Lowell men's cross country team stormed to the NCAA East Region Men's Cross Country Championship on Sunday morning at Franklin Park.

The title was the fifth straight and ninth in the last 11 years for the River Hawks, who move on to the NCAA Championship for the 11th straight year Saturday, Dec. 4, at the Division II Championship Festival in Louisville, Ky.

UMass Lowell scored 41 points, while Stonehill placed second with 75 points. Southern Connecticut placed third with 121 points, while American International College (130) took fourth and Bentley (134) fifth.

Veiga's finish marked the fourth time in 11 years a UMass Lowell runner won the individual honor. Carl Mease won the individual title in 2001, Chris Kapfer in 2003 and Ruben Sanca won it in 2008.
