NFL Leader to Speak

By From the Boston Globe

LOWELL, Mass.ߞ;National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell is scheduled to deliver the address at the University of Massachusetts Lowell's commencement.

The university said Friday that Goodell will also accept a posthumous Doctor of Humane Letters degree for his late father, Sen. Charles Goodell, who supported civil rights, education and the war on poverty. A Republican elected to the U.S. House from New York in 1959, Goodell was appointed to fill Robert Kennedy's Senate seat after Kennedy's 1968 assassination.

Chancellor Martin Meehan called Roger Goodell "an inspirational role model," who like his father leads "without compromising their beliefs."

Goodell said he looks forward to telling graduates how the lessons he learned from his father and in leading the NFL can be applied to anything in life.

Commencement is May 29.
