The UMass Lowell field hockey team, fresh of its most successful season, will be featured as part of the CBS Sports special presentation, "Championships of the NCAA," on Saturday, Dec. 20, on Ch. 4.

The special, which will air from 2:30-3:30 p.m., profiles the 2003 Division II and III men's and women's teams which advanced to NCAA Championships in the fall sports.

UMass Lowell hosted the NCAA Field Hockey Tournament semifinal and championship in November, falling to Bloomsburg in the title match, 4-1.

"As a coach of a sport that usually does not get national recognition, being on CBS is extraordinary," said Shannon Hlebichuk, UML's second-year head coach. "It is quite an honor and one that I will cherish throughout my coaching career."

During the NCAA Division II Field Hockey Championship, the CBS crew chronicled the UMass Lowell and Bloomsburg University student-athletes both on and off the field.

"It's a behind-the-scenes look," said producer Steve Scheer. "We try to get into locker rooms for the pregame speeches, ride the team buses and attend team dinners. We try to get all the emotions of the student athlete."
