Undergraduate Application Requirements

Undergraduate Admissions Process

International students apply through the regular Admissions process.  The information you provide as part of this process will identify you as an international student.  For the purpose of this page, International Student refers to any student who is neither a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident of the U.S. 
To ensure a smooth admissions process, keep application deadlines in mind and begin the application process as early as possible due to additional requirements for international applicants. 
Your completed application package shall include:

  1. A completed application for Undergraduate Admission

    • You are considered a freshman if you have not taken any secondary/college coursework. Your application should include your high school records.  Scores from the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) of the College Entrance Examination Board (CEEB) or the American College Test (ACT) will be required, along with an essay and a letter of recommendation.  The CEEB code number for UMass Lowell is 3911.

    • You will be considered a transfer if you have taken any college/secondary coursework.  All transcripts from international institutions must be evaluated course-by-course by World Education Services (WES) (, telephone: 212-219-7330) before the University advisors review them for transfer credits.

    • In order for appropriate transfer of credits to take place, course descriptions are required for all undergraduate coursework. Once the course descriptions are received, these will be forwarded to the appropriate academic department for evaluation.  Please note that approval of transfer credits is determined by each individual department, and there are no guarantees that transfer credits will be granted.

  2. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) Scores

    • All international applicants are required to submit results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam except citizens of Australia, Canada (except Quebec), United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand, Guyana and English Speaking countries of Africa and West Indies. You are responsible for making arrangements to take the test.
      • For freshmen applicants, the University requires a minimum TOEFL score of 550 on the paper version of the test, 213 on the computer-based version and 79-80 on the internet-based version
      • For transfer applicants, the University requires a minimum TOEFL score of 550 on the paper version, 213 on the computer-based version and 79 on the internet-based version

    • The TOEFL requirement can also be waived if you can demonstrate that you have completed at least two academic semesters of full time college/university study in the USA by the date of submission of the application.  Please email: and request in writing.
