Srini Balasubramanian, Ph.D. '97 was a co-founder of Konarka Technologies, Inc., a University of Massachusetts Lowell spin-off. Konarka Technologies was involved in roll-to-roll manufacturing of flexible organic photovoltaic modules. The company raised over $180 million through venture and corporate financing. At Konarka Balasubramanian was leading the research, process development and quality assurance of organic photovoltaics for portable power applications. Due to difficult market conditions Konarka was forced to shut down operations in May 2012. Post Konarka, Srini helped UMass Lowell evaluate new technologies for potential startup options as a New Venture Fellow. Since August 2013, Balasubramanian has been working at Gentex Optics leading a team of scientists and engineers on the development of new laminates for ophthalmic applications. Recipient of numerous awards for his work in polymer science and plastics engineering, Balasubramanian has presented his research across the country.
