“Word Builder is a hands on activity that will help children read and correctly pronounce words in a fun way.”
This team won Second Place in the First to Market category. They were awarded $2,500. Team members include Sergio Coronado and Ian Copothorne, both who are juniors studying Computer Engineering.

Word Builder is an interactive toy designed to help children build the foundations of reading at an early age. The toy will be an evolutionary system that will grow with the child as they develop the skills necessary to learn how to read. It was proposed that the failure to read at grade level by the third grade could dampen an individual’s ability to break the intergenerational poverty cycle. This team’s goal is to create a business model in which for every toy bought by middle and upper income households, a low-income family will be given one.
