International students are typically required to maintain full-time registration (12 credits for undergraduate students, 9 credits for graduate students) throughout their program of study. However, in some instances, students may be permitted to drop below full-time registration.
The U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services only allows a reduction in course load in the following cases and only with the approval of the International Students and Scholars Office:
- Undergraduate Students are only permitted to be on reduced course load in their final semester.
- Graduate Students who are coursework students are only permitted to be on a reduced course load in their final semester.
- Graduate Thesis/Dissertation students, please refer to details on the Reduced Course Load form when you are eligible to apply for reduced course load status.
- To apply please fill out the Reduced Course Load Form (pdf).
All requests for reduced course load status must be received in the International Students and Scholars Office by the first day of the academic session for which the student is requesting the reduction in course load status.
For more information, please review the Reduced Course Load Presentation (pdf).
Students with questions on Reduced Course Load based on a medical condition should contact the International Students & Scholars Office during Advising Hours.
