About the International Students & Scholars Office

The International Students & Scholars Office (ISSO) is dedicated to the university's commitment to global engagement and inclusion.

UMass Lowell #YouAreWelcomeHere logo. #YouAreWelcomeHere is a welcome message from U.S. higher education to international students around the world. It is a campaign designed to affirm that our institutions are diverse, friendly, safe and committed to student development.

The International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) manages the regulatory compliance of 2,000+ international students, faculty, and researchers. The ISSO staff, with a cumulative total of over 45 years of experience serving the international population in an academic environment, is a  professional resource for the UMass Lowell community. We offer weekly, personalized advising sessions with our immigration advisors and weekly Coffee Hours featuring a variety of on and off-campus resources.

  • We assist with specialized off-campus work authorization, including Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and Pre-, Post- and STEM-Optional Practical Training (OPT) applications. We continue to monitor and advise 500+ students who remain on UMass Lowell legal sponsorship for 12-36 months post-graduation.
  • ISSO advises on J-1 Exchange Visitors, while Human Resources advises H-1B Specialty Occupation Workers, O-1 Persons of Extraordinary Ability, TN/NAFTA Professionals, Permanent Residency, and other work-related visa categories.

The ISSO works closely with offices across campus, including Career Services & Cooperative Education Center, Human Resources, Graduate and Undergraduate Admissions, International Experience and Study Abroad, and the Office of Multicultural Affairs to ensure the best experience for international students and scholars.
