It is with great excitement and enthusiasm that our chapter is looking forward to 2018. We are moving ahead to growing our membership, sharing our work, and supporting each other in the months ahead.
This past fall we supported two colleagues with awards to support their research and dissemination of knowledge. Past President Dr. Peggy Knight received a $100 travel award to present her work at the Sigma Biennial Convention. Dr. Cherlie Magny-Normilus received $2,000 to support her research leading to her doctorate received this past December from UMass Lowell! I hope you enjoy reading about these two wonderful nurses and their work in the coming pages of this newsletter.
Our parent organization, Sigma, has recently undergone a rebranding that you will notice over the next four years and in the header above. Announced at the 44th Biennial Convention this past September, Sigma Theta Tau International has shortened its name to “Sigma” with the descriptor “Global Nursing Excellence”. The organization is and will remain an honor society. This change was made to have our organization stand out among nursing groups and to distinguish us from fraternal, social, or academic-only societies. The crest will remain as a symbol limited to members-only and for use on certificates, stoles, and plaques. The Greek letters, ΣΘΤ, will no longer be used except on jewelry. If you want more information on these changes I invite you to visit the new website at sigmanursing.org.
I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome our newest members, joining us from the Epsilon Beta Chapter at Fitchburg State University. While we are sad to hear of our neighbor chapter closing, we are pleased some of their members are choosing to transfer their membership to Eta Omega. Please look for these new members at our upcoming events and welcome them to the chapter!
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to encourage you to engage with the chapter and with the Board of Directors. The calendar events is included in the pages below and I would love to see some new (and known) faces at our events. Our next election for the Board of Directors is coming in June 2018 with vacancies opening for President Elect and Secretary. If you are interested in joining the Board, or just getting more involved please feel free to contact me via email at: Christine_Repsha@uml.edu.
Best wishes for a happy & healthy 2018,
Christine Repsha, MS, FNP-C
President, Eta Omega of Sigma 2017-2019
