Workplace Learning and Development and Information Technology are delighted to introduce the Tech Cafe.

This series of interactive sessions will introduce you to a variety of topics and IT Technical experts will be available to answer any questions you may have. These sessions are open to all staff and faculty. Video links of previously held sessions are provided below:

Tech Cafe 1: Eduroam Wireless

How secure is your WiFi connection? At home? At Work? In Public Places? If you had to rate the security of your wireless connection, what would be your score? We all use wireless to connect to the network with our phones, tablets, laptops and other devices all day long. In this class we will talk about the different types of security used at UML (eduroam) to protect your data as well as the various methods of security you should be using in your home network. What do all the security terms mean and which ones should you be implementing? We will also talk about how to protect your data when connecting to public networks. If you’re someone who works remotely often and wants some basic understanding of the ways to secure your data from attackers, this class is for you.

Tech Cafe 2: Conference Rooms: How to Connect & Use the Technology

How many times have you gone into a conference room and the first 20 minutes are spent trying to make the technology work? Frustrated? We will walk you through how things work and talk about the technology in a conference room, plus show you some other tools to use for any meeting, whether it’s for 2 people or 50 people.

Tech Cafe 3: Office 2016/OneDrive

If you're still using Microsoft Office 2010 or 2013, you should come see what the latest version of the world-standard productivity toolset has for you. Come learn ways to seamlessly collaborate and share documents with team members, colleagues at other institutions, contracted service providers and any other group you can think of. Get tips and tricks for how to make the upgrade easier and get productive fast on the latest software. Join HR and IT as we host the first in a series of workshops we're calling Tech Cafe. Come for the coffee and donuts, but stay for the tech. Afterwards, IT will have technical experts on hand to answer any questions you might have.

Tech Cafe: Security

Did you know the University is constantly under attack by CyberCriminals? If so, did you know that every single employee at UMass Lowell has been targeted directly? Come learn the latest tools and skills you can use to defend yourself and the University from the fastest growing criminal category in the world, and hear what UMass Lowell IT's Information Security team is doing to help keep you, your privacy and the University's data safe at this Tech Café workshop. Afterwards, IT will have technical experts on hand to answer any questions you might have.

Tech Cafe: Using Virtual Desktops for Productivity

Maybe you've heard of vLabs, or your students have talked about it. Do you know what it is? Do you know that you can use it for your own productivity needs? vLabs is a powerful new virtual desktop technology currently supported by Information Technology and is available to all members of the University community. If you've ever needed to access "that file" from off-campus, or have wanted to use Photoshop or SPSS but didn't have it installed on your computer, and would like to know how you can do so - instantly - this Tech Café workshop is perfect for you.
