Strategic Development Plan for 2016-2021

Coburn Hall opened in 1894 the original building of the Lowell Normal School. In many respects, it remains architecturally the signature building on the South Campus.

Since 2010, UMass Lowell's transformative growth and development has been guided by a multi-year strategic planning process, titled UMass Lowell 2020 Strategic Plan, which provides a blueprint for how the University will achieve national and international recognition as a world class institute by 2020. In addition to academic and research initiatives, this strategic plan includes specific objectives related to master planning, facilities renewal, and sustainability. The plan is updated regularly with the participation of over 200 campus constituents and its progress is reviewed against quantitative benchmarks on an annual basis.

Looking forward, the University anticipates a series of capital projects focusing primarily on facility renewal and modernization. This Strategic Development Plan for 2016-2021 (pdf) details the projects that are under development, as well as the University's plan to minimize, mitigate, and reduce its environmental effects. This document also serves as an official Notice of Project Change under the Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act (MEPA) in conjunction with the Special Review Procedure that was established for the review of University projects in 2011. This Strategic Development Plan was submitted to the MEPA Office in December 2016.
