Audition Guidelines

A child from the String Project talks to a UMass Lowell student backstage.

All students who have been in the String Project for 4+ years will be required to take an audition to determine their seating assignment in either the Accelerando, Sinfonia or Lowell Youth Orchestra ensembles. These auditions are to help us place students in the group that will help them learn the most.

You will need to play two major scales and arpeggios, two minor scales and arpeggios, and a short melodic etude.

All auditions will take place on Tuesday, September 6. Please be ready to play your audition in the Recital Hall at 5 p.m.

If you have any questions, or would like to set up a lesson or two for extra help on your auditions, please email us at stringproject@uml.edu and we can connect you with one of our Teaching Artists.

Auditions will be held at the beginning of the Spring Semester.

A key to understanding the markings on scales regarding finger patterns and which position you'll shift to is also available online.

Practice slowly with a metronome. Do your best to play the audition material as written. 20 to 30 minutes of practice a day will make all the difference in the world!

You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the pdf files. It can be download for free from the Adobe website.
