Major Requirements

The major in English / Theatre Arts provides comprehensive training in theatre within a well-rounded liberal arts education, preparing students for graduate study and for careers in the professional theatre, the entertainment industry, and many other fields. Training in theatre produces well-rounded students with strong analytical and communication skills who work well as a team and under pressure – abilities that many employers in business and industry also look for in the people they hire.

The required and elective courses introduce students to the history of theatre and to its various arts, including acting, directing, design, playwriting, and technical theatre. The Production Experience requirement ensures that students have hands-on experience in the collaborative process of theatre. Students are encouraged to concentrate a substantial portion of their upper-level coursework within a particular area of their choice—for example, performance, design/tech, or writing/dramaturgy. A capstone course gives students the chance to do further advanced work within that chosen area.

UMass Lowell students perform A Midsummer Night's Dream, the comedy written by William Shakespeare in 1595/96.

Requirements

The major in Theatre Arts requires a minimum of 37 credits. Students take 4 foundation courses and at least 7 electives distributed among the areas of performance, creative electives, technical theatre, and dramatic text/theatre history. Three credits in Production coursework and one capstone course are also required.
