Sabrina Maldonado

Abstract

I wrote this poem on my hair, metaphorically relating it to my life and who I am. As a child, I grew up ashamed of my curly hair because I was unsure of my identity. As I have grown into a young woman, I have embraced my hair, who I am, and the story it tells. My curls are unruly, untamed, and like myself, willing to break the barriers set before me.

  • O melhor de mim é o meu cabelo.
O meu cabelo é castanho, rico como o chocolate.
É encaracolado e suave, espiralando em todas as direções.
Quando o sol lhe toca, brilha.
Quando a chuva lhe toca, respira e salta.

    O meu cabelo cresce comigo,
Mas cada fio segue um caminho.
    Ora apertado, ora solto.
    Ora escuro, ora loiro.
O meu cabelo não se deixa domar, tem as suas próprias regras.
O meu cabelo é durável, único, espontâneo,
    Tal como eu.
