Biosketch

Walter Toomey, J.D., is an Associate Teaching Professor and LSAC Pre-Law Advisor in the Legal Studies Program at UMass Lowell. His teaching areas include business law and ethics, employment law, litigation, intellectual property, cyber law, environmental law, criminal law, wills, trusts & estates, legal research and writing, constitutional law, and legal concepts. He teaches for the Honors College and online. He has co-authored texts on intellectual property, and served as president and treasurer of the North Atlantic Regional Business Law Association. He has also served UMass Lowell as director of Legal Studies, faculty senator, Honors College mentor and thesis advisor, LSAT prep instructor and as a mediator in the UMass Lowell Mediation Program. 

Professor Walter Toomey is also a licensed Massachusetts attorney and an experienced litigator. His law practice in Boston, Massachusetts has focused on business law, employment law, and other civil litigation matters including workplace and public accommodation discrimination on the basis of disability, age, gender, pregnancy, religion, national origin, race, sexual orientation, associational discrimination, and retaliation, as well as sexual harassment, unpaid wages and overtime, trade secret disputes, noncompete litigation, business disputes, unemployment insurance disputes, and M.G.L. c. 93A claims. Toomey has successfully tried civil jury cases in the Superior and District courts of Massachusetts, argued appeals before the Massachusetts Appeals Court, argued before various panels of the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office and the Office of Workforce Development, and successfully tried cases at the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination and in private arbitration. He is also a certified and experienced mediator.
