Peru Project 2011

Windmill pump design for the Tohono O’odham Reservation

Course: 22.423 - Capstone
Semester: Spring 2009
Instructor: John Duffy
Partner:Tohono O’odham Reservation, AZ

For the conditions that will be faced in Arizona, the students decided to use the positive displacement will provide better feasibility, especially with the 300 ft well. Using the positive displacement pump for this 15 ft well too will help in the future to determine pumping needs for the 300 ft well. The American/Multi blade turbine type of turbine was chosen, mainly because of the start up speed required. Since the average wind speed in Arizona is approximately 8 MPH near ground level, the American style turbine allows for low start up speed which is what is needed in this case.

The construction is awaiting the students at TO tribal college to finish the solar bathroom modules and then move on to the water pumping system.
