Partner: Village Empowerment Peru Project
Partnership Description: This project is one of about 80 systems designed by UML students in connection with the Village Empowerment program a partnership between UML and two networks of remote villages in the Andes in Peru. Students from 13 other universities have participated also. The VE program has expanded to include the Tohono O'odham nation in AZ, in particular the tribal college there. The particular goal of this project was to improve the water supply systems in Peru.
Project Description: This sand filtration water purification system was designed to be made of materials that are locally available and that could be constructed by local villagers. It was successfully constructed by local villagers with the help of one of the students in the project (Kelly Martinez who is from Columbia originally) and other students and volunteers with the VE program.
It is still running successfully as of June 2009 in the village of Quillapampa.
