Partnership Description: In this Engineering Ethics course, students carried out literature searches on the emerging fields of nanotechnology. After carrying out a careful search of the literature, students wrote a 5-10 page essay on a specific application of nanotechnology that has potential to meet an existing material or physical need of the Peruvian mountain villagers in contact with the Peru UML team or people living in similar conditions in other developing countries that are native to some of the students in class.
Partnership Description: The Application of Nanotechnology in Developing Countries: A Case Study. II: (http://energy.caeds.eng.uml.edu/Peru/index.shtm) essay included a number of elements and descriptions of: the village/community, basic material, physical or economic need to be addressed, the nano-based product or process that could address this basic need, the impact or positive result(s) for the village/community that would follow from this application of a nano-based product or process, a consideration of any potential environmental, health or safety risks associated with the nano-based product or process, a consideration of the projected time frame for the development of the nano-based product or process, a consideration of the projected time frame for the nano-based product or process to be cost effective enough to be used in developing countries, a closing paragraph stating the "positive results" gained from doing this project, and a one -page synopsis of the report to be distributed to village leaders.
