A multi-bladed windmill coupled with a rope pump was determined to be a suitable system for the environment expected. Once the basic designs were chosen, major components of each system were designed using previous research as well as mechanical engineering skills developed at UMass Lowell. The major characteristics of the system were determined and analyzed to ensure an acceptable level of performance and safety. Designs were created such that local materials and simple machinery can be used to build and maintain the system. It is hoped that the final designs will be implemented in Turripampa, Huarmey, Peru and will contribute to the betterment of the lives of the local residents.
A fixed direction turbine and rope pump are being designed by a graduate student in the renewable energy engineering program for a directed studies course. Plans are to construct and install the system in January 2010.
