Design and Manufacture of Rechargeable Headlamp Casings for Peru

Course: 26.218 - Introduction to Design
Semester: Spring 2006
Instructor: Steve Orroth and Nick Schott
Partner: Village Empowerment Peru Project

Partnership Description: The Village Empowerment Peru Project has been described above. Professor John Duffy and graduate students native to Peru made a presentation to the students at the beginning of the course. They were also available for consultation to faculty and students as the need arose. At least one design of headlamp casing was field tested in Peru in June.

Project Description: Design and Manufacture of Rechargeable Headlamp Casings for Peru. The 27 students of the Introduction to Design Plastics Engineering class worked in teams to come up with ideas for low-cost head-lamp casings made out of commercially available parts. This necessitated researching types, characteristics and costs of different plastics and creating an appropriate design for the dry, mountainous climate of the western Andes. Casings were manufactured by hand and delivered to the Village Empowerment Peru Project in time for June trip.
