Course: 25.107 - Introduction to Engineering I

Twenty-five students out of sequence for the fall Intro to Eng. I course (transfers, withdrawals, etc.) engaged in two S-L projects in their course, collectively worth thirty-percent of the final grade. Project 2 was launched by the students visiting the “wet room” at the TIHC to do hands-on testing of different types of waterwheels, and to design canal systems in teams for comparisons of functionality.
Free current hydroturbines were created primarily from found materials, had to meet specifications, including lighting one or more LEDs. Turbines were tested by running them around the edge of a pool set up on campus in demo sessions for the TIHC staff.
Learning objectives met by the S-L project:
- Develop an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering.
- Develop an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs.Develop an ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams.
- Develop an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems.
- Develop an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility.
- Instill the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global and societal context.
Community objectives met by the project:
- 5 hydro-turbines for potential display
- Familiarize new UML students to the National Park and other resources in downtown Lowell.
