Students and faculty members attend periodic meetings of the local and national chapters of a wide-range of professional and trade organizations affiliated with the chemical engineering field.
  • American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE)

    The American Society for Engineering Education is committed to furthering education in engineering and engineering technology. This is accomplished by promoting excellence in instruction, research, public service, and practice; exercising worldwide leadership; fostering the technological education of society; and providing quality products and services to members.

    American Chemical Society

    The American Chemical Society (ACS) is a not-for-profit membership organization founded in 1876 and chartered by a 1937 Act of the U.S. Congress. With a membership of 161,000 chemists, chemical engineers, and other practitioners of the chemical sciences, it is the world's largest scientific society. ACS is recognized as a world leader in fostering scientific education and research, and promoting the public's understanding of science.

    American Institute of Chemical Engineers

    The AIChEWeb a terrific source of information for those considering a career in chemical engineering, studying towards their engineering degree, or working as a seasoned engineering professional.

    Nuclear Energy Institute

    The Nuclear Energy Institute focuses the collective strength of the nuclear energy industry to shape policy that ensures the beneficial uses of nuclear energy and related technologies in the United States and around the world.  Today, NEI is a highly focused organization that gives the industry a strong voice in national energy policy. The institute receives policy guidance from a board of directors representing all membership segments. Member advisory committees and working groups provide input in specific issue areas

    American Nuclear Society (ANS)

    The American Nuclear Society is a not-for-profit, international, scientific and educational organization. It was established by a group of individuals who recognized the need to unify the professional activities within the diverse fields of nuclear science and technology. December 11, 1954, marks the Society's historic beginning at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C. ANS has since developed a multifarious membership composed of approximately 11,000 engineers, scientists, administrators, and educators representing 1,600 plus corporations, educational institutions, and government agencies. It is governed by three officers and a board of directors elected by the membership.

    Society of Nuclear Medicine

    The Society of Nuclear Medicine is an international scientific and professional organization founded in 1954 to promote the science, technology and practical application of nuclear medicine. Its 16,000 members are physicians, technologists and scientists specializing in the research and practice of nuclear medicine. In addition to publishing journals, newsletters and books, the Society also sponsors international meetings and workshops designed to increase the competencies of nuclear medicine practitioners and to promote new advances in the science of nuclear medicine.

    Nuclear Energy Agency

    The Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) is a semi-autonomous body within the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), located in the Paris area in France. The NEA contributes to the development of nuclear energy as a safe, environmentally-acceptable and economical energy source through co-operation among its participating countries.  The NEA membership currently consists of 27 countries across Europe, America, Australia and Asia. It represents 85% of the world's installed nuclear capacity and includes a large majority of the more advanced countries in the nuclear field.

    Materials Research Society

    The Materials Research Society is a non-profit organization that brings together scientists, engineers and research managers from industry, government, academia and research laboratories to share findings in the research and development of new materials of technological importance.

    Technical Association of Pulp and Paper Industry

    With over 32,000 members worldwide, TAPPI is the world's largest professional organization dedicated to the paper and pulp industries. The TAPPI Foundation was founded as a way for today's members to help secure the future of the paper and related industries. Among its objectives, the TAPPI Foundation bestows grants, fellowships, and awards in support and recognition of achievement in the paper and pulp industries.

    Paper Industry Management Association

    PIMA is the premier association for management professionals in the paper and pulp industry. Its purpose is to contribute to the strength of the international pulp and paper community by providing the means for members to address relevant industry issues and to develop their management and leadership skills.

    Society for Industrial Microbiology

    The Society for Industrial Microbiology (SIM) is a professional association dedicated to the advancement of microbiological sciences, specifically as applied to industrial materials, processes, products and their associated problems. Its members constitute scientists employed in industry, government and university laboratories 

    Biochemical Technology Division of the American Chemical Society

    This division promotes the exchange of information among academic and industrial researchers regarding technology utilizing life-based systems to produce useful products and services

    Control System Society

    The IEEE Control Systems Society (CSS) was founded in l954 as a scientific, engineering and professional organization dedicated to the advancement of the theory and practice of systems and control in engineering. Today, the Society has more than 10,000 members around the world. Membership in the group has many benefits for practical engineers as well as theory specialists. Society members receive three journals: the Control Systems Magazine, the Transactions on Automatic Control, and the Transactions on Control Systems Technology.

    International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE)

    ISPE, the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering, is a global, not-for-profit membership organization that provides education, training, and technical publications to pharmaceutical manufacturing professionals. ISPE is committed to the advancement of the educational and technical efficiency of its members through forums for the exchange of ideas and practical experience.

  • The student chapters of professional societies help to further the intellectual, professional and social pursuits of those interested in a particular field of science and engineering. The honor societies also provide tutoring services for students in a particular discipline.

    The American Institute of Chemical Engineers is the global home of chemical engineers. The UMass Lowell Student Chapter of AIChE aims to promote the professional development of its members through communication and collaboration with our faculty, industry professionals and other professional and student groups.

    The Society of Women Engineers is an international organization that aims to inspire, promote, and celebrate women in the field of engineering.     SWE’s UML chapter typically holds general body meetings on Mondays at 6:30 p.m. Our meetings include everything from company invites to engineering panels to professional development sessions and paint nights! Scholarships

The Chemical Engineering department annually distributes scholarships on a competitive basis based on either academic merit, financial need or a combination of both. Currently, there are three endowed scholarships and several department scholarships.

  • Roland E. Derby Scholarship 
    This scholarship is for sophomore chemical engineering students and is based on scholastic achievement with due consideration to financial need. The scholarship may be renewed in the junior and senior years if satisfactory academic standing is maintained.

    Gerard J. Tremblay Jr. Memorial Scholarship 
    This scholarship benefits deserving chemical engineering students who are in satisfactory academic standing.

    The Hogden Chemical Engineering Scholarship
    This scholarship is available for chemical engineering students participating in the paper engineering option.

    Randy Swartz Memorial Scholarship 
    This scholarship is available for chemical engineering students in the biological engineering option.

    Professor Dominick A. Sama Endowed Scholarship  
    These scholarships are for the students who, at the beginning of the sophomore, junior, and senior class levels, have achieved the highest GPA in each class level during their previous semesters.

    Bernard L. Killion Memorial Scholarship
    This scholarship is available for students participating in the nuclear engineering option.

    Department Scholarships
    These scholarships are available for chemical engineering students based on
    a combination of scholastic achievement and financial need. Scholarships will be awarded to two members of the sophomore, junior and senior classes each year who are in satisfactory academic standing.

    New England Regional Student Program 
    Residents of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut or Rhode Island are eligible for a significant tuition and fee reduction when opting for the nuclear engineering option in the Chemical Engineering Department.

Co-op Program

The Chemical Engineering department has a flexible Co-Op program that is coordinated through the UMass Lowell Career & Co-op Center. Technical elective credit can be obtained for professional-level experience in the Co-op program. For more information, contact Dr. Nese Orbey.
