All freshmen entering the undergraduate education program (BA Ed.) are assigned a professional academic advisor, Laura Ecker (see information below). Change of majors and transfer students are assigned to the program coordinator, Dr. Anita Greenwood (see information below).
Visit UMass Lowell's Advising pages for the student toolkit and a step-by-step guide to registration.
Some students may also be part of the River Hawk Scholars Program and have a second advisor, Rachel Shertzer.
All students in the College of Education are required to meet with an advisor prior to registering for classes and to discuss ways to support their success at UML.
Because this is a professional degree and teacher candidates will be working in local schools, they will be required to submit information for background checks (CORI – Criminal Offender Record Investigation). School districts may refuse to allow a student to complete field and clinical experiences if certain offences are revealed. These circumstances may result in students being unable to complete a teacher preparation program. In compliance with Massachusetts law, schools will also require that teacher candidates be fingerprinted prior to their student teaching practicum.
