This year’s recipient of the Chancellor’s Medal for Public Service and Civic Engagement is 104 years old and continues to boldly thrive.
From its humble beginnings in 1917, Market Basket has grown from a small Superette in a richly diversified Lowell neighborhood, originally known as the “Acre-Acropolis,” to one of New England’s largest and most influential supermarkets.
With its more than 25,000 associates, Market Basket continues to be a leading supplier of affordable, high-quality food to communities throughout Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Southern Maine.
More than half a century ago, working with the ideology of truly investing in the people, the late Mr. T. A. Demoulas implemented the Market Basket profit sharing plan. The plan directly benefits the associates by letting them share in the earnings they helped to create, enabling each individual to build a lifelong career with the company, thus helping to fulfill the American dream for generations.
Today, with its 84 stores and two charitable foundations, Market Basket supports hospitals, educational institutions, community development groups, art organizations and other institutions in need throughout the Northeast.
At UMass Lowell, Market Basket has been a major contributor of student scholarships and is a leading employer for thousands of students who have funded their tuitions with part-time and summer jobs.
Market Basket has been a source of wonderful work experiences for UMass Lowell students over the years, with over 40 current alumni having advanced their careers in a variety of leadership roles within the organization.
Market Basket President Arthur T. Demoulas’ core philosophy is “a culture of shared responsibility dedicated to respect, fairness and dignity for all.” That philosophy, when coupled with quality products and reasonable prices, helps to demystify the secret behind this remarkable company’s longevity.
