The mission of the University of Massachusetts Lowell Department of Environmental, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences is prepare students for graduate school and for careers in research labs, industry, consulting and weather forecasting firms, and state and federal agencies. The two priorities of the department are quality instruction and research that emphasize the understanding of Earth Systems and the assessment of Environmental Change. We seek to prepare students who are culturally aware and who recognize the challenges and opportunities presented by human – natural environment interactions.
The department offers programs of study that provide a firm base in science and mathematics and a broad understanding of the natural environment. The programs are multidisciplinary in approach with a strong emphasis on the physical environment. Multiple pathways and electives in the various options (Atmospheric Science, Environmental Geoscience, and Environmental Studies) allow students, in collaboration with their adviser, to structure programs that meet their interests and career goals. We also provide service courses for majors in other science and engineering departments and the broader university community.
