Following the university’s mission to prepare our students to be “Work Ready, Life Ready, World Ready,” the Department of World Languages and Cultures, in the College of Fine Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Lowell offers a B.A. in World Languages and Cultures with four options: French; French/Spanish; Italian/Spanish; Spanish. We also offer several minors related to the study of various languages and/or their unique culture. Moreover, the Department of World Languages and Cultures delivers courses in many different languages to fulfill our College language requirement. Our curriculum specifically focuses on the relations, interactions and influences of the arts and humanities on one another, both in the context of a single linguistic or cultural community and in our multilingual and multicultural global world. With this goal in mind, the department of World Languages and Cultures strongly encourages students to study abroad or to complete an internship abroad through one of our many partner institutions across the globe. This approach places the department of World Languages and Cultures within the scope of the university’s mission of educating global citizens and underscores the centrality of languages.
Consistent with the university’s mission to “enhance the intellectual, personal, and cultural development of its students,” the Department of World Languages and Cultures seeks to train students to think both creatively and rigorously about other linguistic regions, and to identify links and establish comparisons between languages and cultures around the world.
Many of our students choose to major, double major or declare a minor in order to enhance their future professional profile and be more attractive to the job market.
Besides its BA in World Languages and Cultures, the department of World Languages and Cultures serves the College of Fine Arts Humanities and Social Sciences by delivering the language courses for the requirement that all majors with a language requirement need to complete. Please consult the Language Requirement webpage for details. Moreover, the department of World Languages and Cultures coordinates and administers the Language Placement exam.
