Mission Statement

Consistent with the university’s mission to “enhance the intellectual, personal, and cultural development of its students,” the Department of World Languages and Cultures seeks to train students to think both creatively and rigorously about other linguistic regions, and to identify links and establish comparisons between languages and cultures around the world.

Overview/Description

The Department of World Languages and Cultures in the College of Fine Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Lowell offers a B.A. in World Languages and Cultures as well as several minors related to the study of various languages and/or their unique culture.

Our curriculum specifically focuses on the relations, interactions and influences of the arts and humanities on one another, both in the context of a single linguistic or cultural community and in our multilingual and multicultural global world. With this goal in mind, the Department of World Languages and Cultures strongly encourages students to study abroad for a year, a semester, a summer or a winter session, or to complete an internship abroad, as UMass Lowell established over 100 partnerships with institutions across the globe.
