Midnight Marathon Bike Ride

UMass Lowell Outdoor Adventure will take part in this ride which is an annual Boston tradition where over 1,000 people bike the same route as the Boston Marathon in the early dark hours of Marathon Monday. During this time the roads are still open to vehicular traffic… and bicycles are vehicles! The ride is not a race nor is it a paid event; it is, however, a unique shared experience, a fun way to meet people, and a decent workout. We meet in the evening at our Bike Shop and Outdoor Center, drive to the start of the Marathon and then begin biking in the dark. Typically the ride takes about 4 hours. The route has some climbs and descents. The van will be driven by a staff member from point to point on the route to support those UML students who are riding. This information is specifically for the UMass Lowell program that will join the larger event. For Public event information, visit the event website

Estimated Physical Exertion Level: Vigorous

  • Distance: 35-43 mi./56-69 km.
  • Climb: 1,400 ft./427 km.

Skill Level

Experience using a bike with gears to ascend and descend hills is highly recommended. Day trips as described above are generally easier with some climbing and descending. The Midnight Marathon is challenging with climbs and descents, and always includes van support to assist bikers.
