Current NIRSA (National Intramural Recreational Sport Association) shall govern all intramural rules used for Kickball at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Intramural Sports reserves the right to make changes or additions to the rules or policies at anytime.

Facility

Kickball will be played at the Campus Recreation Center.

  • Basketball court lines serve as foul lines
  • If the ball hits the ceiling it is a foul ball
  • Any ball that hits the blue curtain/wall is fair territory cannot be caught for an out.  It will be played similar to the Green Monster in baseball.

Players

  1. A teams will consist of 10 players
  2. A minimum of five is required to start and continue a game.
  3. The captain must list the kicking order prior to the start of the game.
  4. Injured Runner: If an accident to a batter-runner or base runner prevents him/her from proceeding in the game, a substitute runner of the same sex will be permitted. If no substitutes are available, the player of the same sex who made the last out will run.

Game-Timing

  1. A game will consist of 3 innings. Each team will be given 3 outs per inning. 
  2. There will be a 10-run limit per inning for each team. Once the 10th run is scored the inning will end, no matter how many outs.
  3. Overtime
    • If the score is tied at the end of regulations, extra innings shall be played until the tie is broken.

Scoring

  1. Points are awarded for each player who circles the bases and steps on home plate without being tagged out.
  2. Any ball that goes through the basketball hoop will be considered a 4-run, bases cleaning, kick.
  3. A home run is when:
    • The ball is kicked onto the track.
    • The ball is kicked above the third white line on the curtain.

Playing Regulations

  1. Outs: A player may be called out by strikeout, tag out, mounding, and a ball thrown that hits the runner below the shoulders.
  2. Kicker is out in situations similar to softball (force outs, pop outs, etc.)
  3. If you argue any call with the umpire, your team will be charged an extra out.
  4. The following moves are not permitted:
    • Leading
    • Stealing
    • Sliding
      • If you slide, your team will be charged an out.
  5. Kickers shall start with a count of 1 ball and 1 strike
  6. A strike is a swing and a miss, or a foul ball
    • Two strikes make an out
    • You must swing and miss to strike out
    • A foul on the second strike will not constitute an out
  7. Three balls will count as a walk.
  8. A ball must be hit past the free throw line to be in play. All other balls in fair territory that land short of the foul line will be a foul ball. No bunting is allowed.
  9. Kicker must wait for the ball to be within three feet of home plate before kicking the ball.
