INTRODUCTION TO KAYAKING

Description

This fun and informative full day program is recommended for beginner and intermediate kayakers looking to build a solid foundation of kayak touring skills. Our certified instructors will teachACA Level 1&Level 2 skillsduring this full day program. The basic curriculum for this course includes: personal preparation, the paddling environment, boat fit, equipment use, paddle strokes, maneuvers and recovery techniques. The day will unfold with instruction sequenced around an enjoyable shuttled trip on the Merrimack River from Riverfront Park in Tyngsboro to the UMass Lowell Boathouse and with plenty of games, practice and feedback throughout.

Equipment

Those who own their own kayak and equipment are encouraged to use it during this course.

All necessary program equipment is provided.

Physical Exertion

Moderate: Participants will paddle 1-5mi/ 2-8km and current may be present but weak. Waves will be less than 1ft with the potential for winds up to 10mph. Expect potentially cold water. Previous experience is recommended but not required. Swimming ability with life jacket assistance is required. Paddle times usually run 3-5 hours a day.

Prerequisites

Appropriate for adults and children 14 and older when accompanied by a parent.

Must be able to independently keep head above water while wearing in a life jacket/pfd

No previous experience required.
