Kayak Instructional Programs

We offer many kayak instructional programs. Click on the links below to learn more or to register. All equipment and supplies are included unless otherwise noted.

Introduction to Kayaking

This fun and informative program is recommended for beginner kayakers and those looking to build a solid foundation of skills. Our certified instructors will teach ACA Level 1 & Level 2 skills during this full day program. We will start with personal preparation, the paddling environment and equipment use. We will then move on to paddle strokes, maneuvers and recovery techniques and with plenty of games, practice and feedback. This course begins and ends at the boathouse and may utilize a shuttle on one of our local rivers.

Those who own their own kayak and equipment are encouraged to use it during this course.

Kayak Basics

This two hour program is designed to give participants a jump start in kayak skills emphasizing safety, basic skill and stroke development and basic recovery technique. Participants will receive an overview of on-water safety, equipment use, forward, reverse and sweep strokes and recoveries. For those with limited time, or looking to try something new, this is the program for you! Be ready to get wet! Our instructional programs are designed for adults, but teens age 14 and older are welcome to participate with a parent.

Stand-UP Paddleboard (SUP) BASICS

Almost a private lesson, in this small group relaxed instructional session, get an introduction to basic safety, strokes and flatwater SUP technique while basking in the evening glow of the sunset over the Merrimack river. This course often includes a few swims (both intentional and otherwise) so be prepared to get wet! Beginners and welcome! *Our Instructional Programs are designed for adults, but teens age 14 and older are welcome to participate with a parent.

FAMILY FUN PADDLE

This Program, open to families with children between the ages of 6 and 12, is a relaxed kid friendly introduction to paddle sports during the least busy part of the day on the river. Get a kid centered introduction to boats, equipment and safety, play games, paddle at your own pace and meet other outdoor oriented families! We intentionally chose the least busy time of day on the river to provide a calm and peaceful learning environment. Registration includes one free adult per paid child. *Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult on the water. Adults not accompanying children in a boat must remain on site for the duration of the program.

KAYAK KIDS PADDLE SKILLS CLINIC

This three-day skills clinic combines skill development and environmental education with a boat full of fun! First and foremost, kids will learn how to be safe on the water. Kids will play games on land and on water while learning about the relationship between animals and the environment. They may test water quality and go searching for turtles and birds. They will become masters of their boats learning posture, paddle strokes, rescues, and more. Kids will leave with self-confidence and lasting memories.

Appropriate for kids 10-13 years old.

TEEN KAYAKING ADVENTURE KAYAK CLINIC

For teens looking for a paddling adventure of their own, join us for three days of exploration. After a day of safety and kayak paddling instruction on the Merrimack River, we will venture out to some of its tributaries--from the scenic Concord to the marshy Nashua River, come experience a great diversity. We will explore these areas and learn kayaking skills, ecology and our environmental impact during this adventurous week! Instruction will be primarily with kayaks however teens will also get a chance to paddle stand up paddleboards and canoes on one day during the week.

Appropriate for teens 14 to 17 years old.

Personal Instruction

Personal small group and one-on-one instruction is available. Our instructors can work with you on a specific skill or set of skills beyond what we offer in our introduction courses. Instruction is available by the hour with a minimum of 2 hours. Contact the us to schedule a time with a certified instructor today. Personal instruction includes all rental equipment needed as well as personal consultation prior to the lesson.

American Canoe Association (ACA)

Level 1-2: Essentials of Kayak Touring Instructor Certification Workshop (IDW / ICW) May 29, 30 and June 1, 2018
