Many members of the team are walk-ons and had never rowed before attending UMass Lowell. Those in their first year of the sport are placed in the category of "Novice" and only race with and against other novice rowers. Generally, rowers are tall with a background in cardio-based sports. We are actively seeking athletes who are 6'2"+ for men, and 5'8"+ for women. We also recruit those who are shorter but fit enough to make up the difference.
UML Rowing is also seeking those for the position of coxswain, which is the person who steers a boat and directs the rowers. Coxswains are on the smaller side (110 lbs for women, 120 lbs for men) and possess strong leadership qualities. Those who are interested in becoming a coxswain must be able to follow directions closely and make decisions quickly.
All interested candidates should contact the UMass Lowell Head Rowing Coach, John Lindberg by email: John_Lindberg1@uml.edu or phone: 978-934-1549. No experience is necessary.
