Distinguished Alumna Mary Jo (O'Donnell) Leahey ’37, Passes Away at Age 95

Alumna Mary Jo (O'Donnell) Leahey, known for her commitment to philanthropy, the community, UMass Lowell, and the arts, passed away at age 95 on Nov. 27, 2011.

Mary Jo was the founder and primary benefactor of the UMass Lowell Mary Jo Leahey Summer Band Camp founded in 1997. The Camp provides the opportunity for high school music students to be instructed by college and professional instructors and conductors to help pursue their dreams of a career in music.

The University has honored her through numerous awards including the Francis Cabot Lowell Award, UMass Lowell Distinguished Alumni Award as well as the awarding of an Honorary Degree with a Doctor of Humane Letters in 2008. Most recently, Mary Jo was inducted into the Circle of Distinction, recognizing top UMass Lowell benefactors who have made generous contributions over their lifetime.

Mary Jo Leahey will be greatly missed.
