UMass Lowell Award for Faculty Advising

Purpose

The UMass Lowell Award for Excellence in Faculty Advising honors individual faculty members who exemplify a deep commitment to improving student success and building a supportive academic environment through a close faculty-to-student interactive partnership. The university recognizes the importance of faculty advising as a sustained process of engagement with a student with the purpose of providing various types of support for personal and professional success by:

  1. offering insight or direction to our students about an academic, social, or personal matter,
  2. ensuring that students make the most of their college experience, and
  3. providing students with the support and tools they need to advance and thrive.

Eligibility

  • The nominee must be a full-time faculty member at UMass Lowell and currently in a tenure, teaching, or clinical-track position.
  • Previous nominees are eligible, and it is hoped that they will be nominated again.
  • Previous winners are not eligible to be considered for a period of six years.

Criteria for Award

Applications will be evaluated according to how the applicant:

  • demonstrates effective and impactful advising
  • demonstrates interpersonal qualities and skills in advising appointments
  • fosters a trusting relationship with students. Provides compassionate support in a positive and optimistic way that supports student growth
  • demonstrates continued commitment to advising by initiating or participating in training and development for advising.
