Emergency Physician Workshop

Emergency Topics

Presented by: Mary Buechler, MD, Kristen Hayes, MD, and Teresa Pazdral, MD, Physicians, Emergency Department, Lawrence General Hospital

Workshop Description

We will be doing a variety of activities related to emergency medicine, including splinting, use of AEDs (automated external defibrillators) , use of the epi-pen, the importance of hand washing, and possibly intubating (placing a breathing tube) in dummies.

Leaders’ Job Description

We see patients age 1 day to 101 years.  We see problems from infected hangnails to stabbings and heart attacks.  We will see anyone who has an emergency of any kind. We never know what we will be seeing next.

We have to be able to see something very sad or bad in one room and a few minutes later we have to appear happy while we take care of another problem.

Advice for Career Path

In high school take as much math and science as possible, especially biology: it is surprising what turns out to be fun. Also practice memorizing. Get some experience in a hospital if you can. The training is long: after college there is usually four more years of medical school followed by 3 to 6 more years of training in a specialty. It’s a lot of work but it is worth it if you like to help people.
