In the morning, the girls attend three workshops ranging from forensic science, meteorology and sound engineering to architecture, veterinary medicine and many other fields. Each scientist or engineer outlines the preparation that was necessary for her career, to encourage the girls to take more science and math courses in high school. Workshops typically include a short presentation, followed by illustrative experiments that the girls perform themselves under the direction of the workshop leader. Each workshop consists of twelve to fifteen girls, a science or engineering student helper from the University, two accompanying teachers and the workshop leader.
After lunch, the girls gather together for a formal keynote address and question period conducted by an especially prominent woman scientist or engineer. This year’s keynote speaker is Helen Greiner, co-founder and Chairman of iRobot Corporation.
Upon the completion of Career Day, the workshop leaders continue their efforts, serving as mentors for the girls. The girls are encouraged to correspond with the scientists and engineers for career information and advice.
