What is a New Student Convocation?

This event is the formal welcome all students entering into the UMass Lowell academic community. It serves as the ceremonial start for our new students, just  as Commencement serves as the ceremonial finish for our seniors. This will be an opportunity to meet fellow students and faculty as well as hear from our new Chancellor, Marty Meehan; the College Deans, and our special guest speaker Bert Jacobs, CEO of Life is good.  The theme for this year’s Convocation is “Begin the Journey!”

Keynote Speaker:

Bert Jacobs is the Chief Executive Optimist and co founder of Life is good, the popular clothing line featuring "Jake." In addition to promoting the philosophy of "Do What You Like, Like What You Do," the company sponsors two major free events on the Boston Common each year to support charities focused on the needs of children.

Transportation:

Specially identified busses will be running from the regular stops at North and South to carry students back and forth to the Convocation. The buses will continue running from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. and will be immediately available outside the Campus Recreation Center for all return trips.

Food:

A barbecue, club fair and live band will be available for all students on the CRC lawn immediately following Convocation.
