A Message from Chancellor Meehan

May 1, 2015

Dear UMass Lowell community,

This morning, following a four-month search process to identify a new leader for the University of Massachusetts, the Board of Trustees invited me to serve as the new system president. I have accepted the offer effective July 1, 2015.

Serving as Chancellor of my alma mater for the last eight years has been the most fulfilling period of my professional life. I am proud not just of the incredible transformation of this campus, but how it has been achieved – through collaborative planning and a commitment to excellence shared by faculty, students, staff, administrators and alumni. In many ways, the trustees’ decision is a validation of our shared success elevating UMass Lowell to national and international prominence.

This has been more than just a job. It has been my passion. I have always felt that when the time came to move on, I wanted to be certain that UMass Lowell’s upward trajectory would continue and that I would be in a position to support the campus’s future growth. I am thrilled that those conditions have been solidly met as I assume this new role.

One of the many reasons I am confident of UMass Lowell’s continued progress is our incredibly strong leadership team. The executive cabinet will provide continuity of leadership as the campus moves forward and will have my full support as president.

I could not believe more strongly in the importance of public higher education for the future well-being of our nation. This gateway must be accessible and affordable, with standards and results that match the highest expectations of our Commonwealth. I am excited for the opportunity to lead the five University of Massachusetts campuses as we strive to become one of the premier public university systems in the world, an effort in which UMass Lowell will continue to play a large part.

Sincerely,

Martin T. Meehan
