Museum Institute for Teaching Science – MITS
July 7 – 18, 2008
Teachers Grades 3-8
Ever wish there were a summer camp for adults? MITS is the next best thing, plus it is an opportunity to earn lots of PDPs and inexpensive graduate credit. In two weeks, you get to sample museums and other cultural organizations, learn new activities to take back to classroom (all connected to the state standards), network with your peers, work
inside and outside, just a generally relaxing, enjoyable way to learn.
This year we will be out in the Park boat, study maps and GIS, weave, go to the woods to study math in nature, study electricity, water power, simple machines, the math of quilting—such an array of topics!

Groundwater Institute July 21 & 22, 2008
For teachers Grades 6-12
Presented by the American Ground Water Trust in partnership with the
Tsongas Industrial History Center
Out of sight perhaps but not out of mind for long as precious
groundwater supplies continue to dwindle throughout the world.
Ground water and water wells can provide a great learning laboratory for
children of all ages, not just in science, but also in many other areas
of the school curriculum. An appreciation of the vital role of ground
water in our environment and economy should be part of the learning
heritage of every adult and child.
In addition to presentations and discussions, field trips and site
visits, participants take home classroom-ready activities and receive
professional development points.

Activity for young people in grades 3-8. Free weaving workshop Thursday & Friday, Aug 7 & 8, from 10-11am or 1-2pm.
Interested in how cloth was made? Learn by doing - visit the Boott Cotton Mill Weave Room, learn the workings of power looms, discover how inventions affect workers and production, and explore workers' lives. Best of all, you'll get to weave on a four-harness loom.

Hands-On Inquiry Science with Crickets and
Network Data Collection
In partnership with the UMass Lowell Computer Science Department, we are pleased to host this teacher workshop, August 5-8, 2008.
This is hands-on workshop for teachers who are interested in using
sensors, data probes, and computers for science experimentation.
Working with other participants and workshop leaders, you will develop
inquiry skills as you pose your own questions, formulate experimental
designs, collect data, and then make sense of this data.
