Leadership Recognition AwardsWho's Who in American Universities and Colleges 2009
Criteria: Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges has furthered the aims of higher education by rewarding and recognizing individual effort, in the classroom as well as the community, on a national level. This year’s UMass Lowell’s selection committee is seeking students who, through their contributions and service to community and school, represent the best UMass Lowell has to offer. This award is only conferred upon juniors and seniors with an overall GPA of 2.5 or above. All recipients will be honored at an award ceremony April 5, 2009. Graduating seniors will be further recognized in the 2009 Commencement Program Book.

Individual recognition (these awards may not be won by the same individual two years in a row)
The Emerging Student Leader of the Year Award recognizes a student, who is new to a leadership position within an undergraduate student organization, for outstanding accomplishments and contributions within the organization and the UML Community. Winners: Adam Dunbar- SGA and Danane Chhor- ODK
The Student Leader of the Year Award recognizes an outstanding student leader for notable contributions to the organization in which he/she served, for accomplishments in support of the University's co-curricular program and for notable leadership characteristics and ideals. Nominated individuals should place high emphasis on academics, give unselfishly to others and face personal adversity with spirit and class. Winners: Ruben Sanca, (SGA and ODK), Abbey Denaro, (ODK) and Roger Gyebi, (NSBE)
The Outstanding Community Service by an Individual Award recognizes the efforts of an individual undergraduate student who has actively participated in numerous community service projects during the current academic year, resulting in outstanding contributions to the University and Greater Lowell community. Winner: Melissa Dorval, (ASB)
The Student Organization Advisor of the Year Award honors an advisor of an undergraduate student organization who has provided outstanding service and advisement to an organization. This person must show a commitment to education and to challenging students to grow developmentally throughout the period of contact with the individuals or organization. Winner: Imogene Stulken, Student Veterans Organization
Student Organization Recognition
The Excellence in Diversity Programming Award recognizes an undergraduate student organization which has displayed exceptional educational awareness of cultural diversity through innovative programming that reflects the ever changing demographics of UML’s student population. Winner: Behind the Swoosh, CAPA
The Outstanding Community Service by a Group Award honors an undergraduate student organization for its ongoing or collective service to the community. The project may be a single event or a series of activities. This award is intended for those engaged in activities that offer direct service, as opposed to fund raising or lobbying activities, to a community external to the University. Winner: Student Veterans Organization
The Outstanding New Student Organization of the Year Award recognizes an undergraduate student organization that has existed no more than two years and has demonstrated the greatest amount of growth and promise towards improving the quality of life at UML through its activities. Winner: Hiking Club and Nursing Students without Borders
The Program of the Year Award recognizes a program that, through its efforts, has a far reaching, positive effect on the university community. Winner: Once on This Island presented by the Off Broadway Players
The Student Organization of the Year Award recognizes the outstanding efforts of an undergraduate student organization to further its purpose and to provide programs and opportunities that benefit the students and the general community of UML throughout the year. Winners: Ballroom Dance Club and ASB
