What are the advantages of living on campus?

For freshmen, the advantages are endless. With the LEARN Program (Living Education and Resource Networking), new students are walked through their first year of college. Our staff works closely with them to ensure that their adjustment to college is as smooth as possible. Activities, programs, tutoring and incentives for participating are just a sample of what the LEARN Program has to offer. For more information, check out the LEARN website.

For resident students, the time spent commuting to and from the campus is time which could be spent in classes, studying for exams, preparing papers, making friends and making memories. Living on campus provides you with a fully furnished room, the internet, telephone service, a meal plan and access to all the University and City of Lowell have to offer.

Access to Academic Services

Students who live on campus have the opportunity to spend more time in the libraries, academic labs, computer labs and the Centers for Learning and Academic Support Services.

In addition to the academic support services, students living on campus and at home are more likely to utilize other campus resources such as the Campus Recreation Center, the pool, Recreational Sports activities and others. In addition, the University offers over 100 clubs and organizations.

When is curfew?

As a college student, and young adult, you will not have a curfew at UML. Our students are expected to take responsibility for their actions, schedules, and deadlines. During overnight hours, our security program will verify your identity and campus address before allowing entry to a residence area.

What are the rules?

In addition to the Code of Student Conduct, our Residence Halls are governed by the Residence Hall Conduct Code. This set of community standards is given to each resident student upon check in and at their request (in case they lose it). In general, as a member of a larger community, your behavior needs to conform with the needs of the whole. At the same time, we realize that the residence hall is your home and try to make it as comfortable and flexible a living environment as possible.

Can I use my computer on the campus network?

Every residence hall room at UML is equipped with an Ethernet port to which a personal computer may be connected. Once connected to the campus network, students have access to various UML computing resources such as email, newsgroups, UNIX systems and the Internet. A network card with a 10/100 Base T (twisted pair) connector is needed for the connection. This network card is to be purchased and installed by the student.

The Telecommunications Department does not install, repair, configure or perform any work on a student's computer.

Students connecting to the network must abide by the following policies.  Failure to do so can result in disciplinary action by the Dean of Students.

  • All IP addresses are assigned by a DHCP server. No static addresses are allowed. When configuring a computer make sure the button marked "Obtain an IP address automatically" is checked. This setting is accessed through "Start > Control Panel > Network."

From the two options below mark Obtain an IP address automatically.

  • Obtain an IP address automatically
  • Specify an IP address

Web Servers are not allowed.

FTP servers are not allowed.

Email servers are not allowed.

Illegal MP3 files are not allowed.

Students may not use their Internet connection for business purposes or for personal profit.

It is the responsibility of the resident of the room to allow access to a telecommunications staff member for the purposes of installing, repairing or troubleshooting network connections.

For additional information, students may approach their residence director from their respective residence hall.

Any problems with Ethernet connections should be reported to the HELP desk by dialing HELP on a campus phone. Regular business hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Will I be able to focus on academics?

Residence halls offer a more traditional academic environment. The focus is on providing the best possible environment where the student's ability to participate in extracurricular and social activities is enhanced, in support of their academic goals. If you prefer truly quiet study (absent of distraction), we suggest the study rooms in Fox Hall or the Library.

Are there any Academic and Leadership Opportunities?

There are many opportunities to participate in hall government, the Residence Hall Association (RHA) and related sponsored activities. In addition to the social activities, there are many career development and academic success programs sponsored in the halls, as well as recreational and cultural awareness programs.

For information regarding the Resident Advisor Selection Process, email Residence Life.

Who cleans my room?

Staff will conduct periodic inspections (with prior notification) to ensure that conditions meet our fire safety and cleanliness needs. Common areas of buildings, hallways, bathrooms and lounges are maintained by housekeepers within each building.

Will I make any friends?

The friends you make in college will be the friends you have for life. You have heard this many times before and most college grads would agree it's true. Living on campus provides the opportunity to meet people, live with them, and share an academic and social life.
