"Last Lecture" Series

Beginning in the fall of 1999, the Multi-faith Council has sponsored the "Last Lecture Series". Members of the UML faculty and staff (representing different faith traditions) have spoken for this event. The following presenters have provided texts for their lectures:

Each invited presenter spoke for about 20 minutes in response to the question, "If this were the last lecture you would give, what would you say?" (Related questions for the speakers could be: What is important to you? What do you want your hearers to know? What advice would you give? What questions do you have? What have you learned? Where did you find meaning in or for your life?)

"Lights and Shadows" - a Multi-faith Celebration

The Multi-faith Council and the Council for Diversity and Pluralism sponsored a celebration of "Lights and Shadows", and an introduction to October, November, December, and January holidays/holy days of various faiths. The event was held in the afternoon of Thursday, November 16, 2000, in the Alumni/ae Lounge, North Campus. See our picture gallery.

The interactdive program included a craft project (making a paper star); a sharing of personal experiences from one's faith tradition about the play of "light" and "shadows"; Hindu chants; an introduction to Jainism; a reading from the Koran and interpretive words about Islam; Buddhist chants and poems; a lighting of the Christian Advent wreath; singing "Sancta Lucia" for St. Lucia's Day; and an explanation of lighting the Jewish menorah for Hanukkah (while participants ate latkes [potato pancakes] with applesauce and/or sour cream).
