Studies have shown that teenagers are the largest population affected by sexually transmitted diseases or STDs. Both men and women ages 15 - 19 have the highest rate of chlamydia and gonorrhea, two of the most common STDs.

Many resources are available for information and treatment. An online public outreach project called UNSPEAKABLE, (http://www.unspeakable.com) enables users to identify their own risk for STDs, test their knowledge about different kinds of STDs, and receive information on the latest treatments. Users access this sensitive information in a confidential setting. There are a variety of different pages on the site, including a database of nearly 4,000 STD clinics around the country and a section on frequently asked questions (FAQs).

The American Social Health Association (a voluntary organization dedicated to the prevention and control of STDs) operates the National Sexually Transmitted Disease Hotline under contract with the Centers for Disease Control. Trained counselors are available to answer questions about all STDs. Call the ASHA Hotline at 1-800-227-8922.

On campus resources are also available. Student Health Services is located in Room 335, McGauvran Student Center and is open Mon - Fri,  8:00 am until 4:30 pm. Call UML Student Health Services (934-4991) for more information or an appointment.
