Concussion
A Warning about ConcussionMedical experts from the Centers for Disease Control warn that suffering a second concussion shortly after a first can be fatal, and thus the need to refrain from any activity that would put someone at risk for a second injury.
- Anyone having a head injury with momentary loss of consciousness should not engage in any sports-related activity for at least a week.
- If someone loses consciousness for several minutes, they should take it easy for two weeks or more.
In March 1997 the American Academy of Neurology issued an alert to coaches, trainers, athletes and parents about the dangers of concussions and warned against a "macho tough it out" or "play hurt" attitude.
Anyone who experiences even a momentary loss of consciousness should be checked out by a health care provider.
